Million People March

Andres and Ponso attended the historic Million People March at the Luneta last August 29, 2013 to protest the corruption generated by the Pork Barrel (PDAF) in government. Andres was even interviewed by an independent media on his take on the said issue and why he is participating in the said activity. He answered well and articulated his points. Not bad for a six-grader. Ponso on the other hand was BRIBED with a toy to leave the computer games at home and join Andres in the historic Million People March.

Look-a-like

Its definitely a ride for a person like me who have many look-a-likes in a given space and time of my mortal life. I would like to present the time line when I first received that "you look just like ..." comment from people through the years.

1984

It was the "Bagets" era and I was a bit on the slim side at the time. Must be the adolescent hormones acting up maintaining my body metabolism that is just about right. Overheard at a school fair in St. Paul QC, "He looks like Aga Muhlach."

1992

I was in Cagayan enjoying my Batil Pattong noodle preparation with a friend when the two young waitress, speaking in Ibanag, started giggling. They mentioned that I looked like Nino Muhlach and my companion whispered that I go along with his story that I am actually a relative of the actor. We got our breakfast for free!

2007

The year that I started teaching. Students were calling me Hiro Nakamura of the now defunct, i think, hit series "Heroes." It must have been my haircut that time with a spiky do that merited that comparison.

2012

So far, two students already mentioned that I look like this character

and this Gangnam Style guy is fast catching up on their vote as another of my look-a-like.

I think its reality knocking telling me to do something to at least become a look-a-like of this 2012 Hot Property Actor.

futbol sundays

Summer time Sundays brought us to the UST football field a couple times for some football scrimmage. It was summer, the weather was fine, grass was green, it was good running around and kicking the ball without cares in the world.

Viaje del Sol

Viaje del Sol has been an enigma to us for sometime since we read it years back. South of Manila is a cornucopia of culture, tradition, and anything in between.

So it is year 2011 and we finally got the chance to hop on the bus and check out what Viaje del Sol and all its press releases have to offer.

Villa Escudero

We have been to Villa Escudero in Tiaong, Quezon in 2001 with our cousins Jericho, Miko, and Jessica from the United States and ate with gusto under the man made waterfalls, paddled over the lake-dam on bamboo rafts, swam without care wearing our only clothes, and drove all the way back to Manila dripping wet after passing by Divisoria and CCP. So much for reminiscing.

Our recent Villa Escudero experience with Andres (Ponso and Paco left behind at Lolo and Lola's place) was a Museum trip with interesting odds and ends inside the museum in a pink church structure. 17th century religious icons from the collection of the Escudero family stood side-by-side with antiques from different parts of the world. Some Quiapo stuff was also in there making me wonder how it became part of their collection. Andres freaked out seeing a shrunken head from South America. It was a blitzkrieg tour of sort and the lunch time television show tone of the tour guide is something to reckon with if it could actually do good in the whole shit.

Ugo Bigyan Pottery

We hop on the bus and proceeded to Ugo Bigyan’s crib, a 15 minute drive from the Escudero hacienda. Ugo is a famous potter, like Harry Potter maybe, and saw his pottery. It is made of clay and it does have good designs. The buffet was just spectacular. It’s the Kulawo, a vegetarian preparation that made my heart skip a beat. It tastes like meat! They even showed us how they do it. They put charcoal over coconut and mix magic ingredients. Their spare ribs were so juicy and the fish fillet was gorgeous. Vegetables were real fresh and everything was prepared to satisfy not just the appetite but the senses.

Then we saw a real potter in action doing his craft. What somehow saddened me was that after chatting with the veteran potter, we could compare him to a line chef in a restaurant, I learned that he only earns P250 a day considering that he can make more than 20 mugs that can be sold for P350 each after Mr. Bigyan stamps his imprimatur at the end of the production line. It made me think of the rate of exploitation on the workers. Anyway, so much for Das Kapital and the emancipation of workers from exploitation of man by man, I am just plain stuffed after lunch and chose to be like Bulletin Today trying my shitty best to act neutral and unaffected in this not so neutral world.

Casa San Pablo

With Mr. Potter and the exploitation issue in suspended animation, we went to Baguio, or so it seemed due to the Pine trees that abound in the area after a few minutes walk from a busy San Pablo City road. Casa San Pablo is enchanting. The place has that shabby chic feel and there are interesting corners with interesting bits and pieces that can make one smile and just sit and smile and smile and wonder if leprechauns stay in the woods and not just your ordinary Nuno sa Punso or the occasional Tiyanaks. The snack is not to die for though but the ambiance of the place more than made up for the Pansit Bihon, Fried Bananas, and flowing commercial Iced Tea. You can stay there overnight with their cool rooms if you have the time and plenty of extra money. Room rates are not for Mr. P250 a day Potter.

At the end of the day, we arrived in Manila with good ole Luna lounging in the night sky lulling us to sleep and dream of better days ahead.

Slow time

Its Andres' first day of summer vacation and we are in the hospital waiting for his blood extraction for some test. He has been under the weather since Friday with bouts of fever and coughing in the afternoon. He is feeling real sick unless playing the PSP or Wii or the computer with his brothers and cousins.

We picked him up on his last school day and went out walking under the cool weather of our favorite mall in Manila. It must be the cool weather that did him in. Or that cold infinity pool when we got that free overnight stay in some hotel two weekends ago.

Its Andres' first day of summer vacation and he was asking why time moves so slow. It must be his activity sitting, waiting inside the hospital for his turn. Hospitals might be a time stopper of some sort, prolonging life by slowing time.

Kicked Out

Still reeling from some viral infection I acquired from Paco requiring me to stay at home for five freaking days, I went out of my way to meet with the boss where I teach and learned that my fucking contract will not be renewed next year and that, in elementary my boy, is automatically kicking me out of my work in two months time for some shitty reason I cannot comprehend or even accept in my scheme of things.

Going home feeling numb, uncertainty gnawing my mind, I called up Thelma and told her the good news of me becoming a full time houseband for the children. After reality settled in, I tried acting normal but the world just aint normal for now. Then I saw Paco sleeping peacefully and I lay down beside him. Then tried finishing the book New York Rocker of Gary Valentine (guitarist of Blondie) when Paco, already awake, jumped on me. My mind aching, then my body aching. What a day. This too shall pass.

Christmas

Today is December 25, 2010, Christmas Day. Christmas is the birthday of Jesus the Christ, a man and a God, who many believe, saves mankind from sin, death, inferno, devil, and other shits that are bad for the body, mind, and soul. Jesus is a good man and God. Greet Him when you see Him. Happy Birthday Jesus.

Paco's Birthday Trip

Paco twirled around Manila on his 2nd Birthday last November 29, 2010. The night before Paco's big day, Andres and Ponso already decided for Paco that they will have a big Jollibee meal for breakfast. So be it so early morning, we went to the Philippines' number one fastfood chain and ate burgers and pancakes and rice and hot chocolate and eggs and styrofoam cups and plates and plastic utensils. We prayed for our health and the ozone layer before the repast. Then they played and played and even Paco was running inside some big colorful pipes while we waited for him to poop as a signal to go home.

We then left Andres and Ponso at their grandparent's house and went to Trinoma to check on nothing in particular but just to go around with Paco. We just walked and looked at the people while Paco slept missing his chance to look at, well, ah, people. Thelma tried Cinnabon's cinnamon and it was good relative to its fucking expensive price. Paco also tried it when he woke up and ate heartily.

Then we went back to Lolo and Lola's house and had a simple party with a really good cake and vanilla ice cream to cap off Paco's 2nd birthday.

uncool

I am not a cool father to Andres, Ponso, and Paco lately. I shout and easily gets irritated even from their small whims that does not deserve a big time heart breaking negative reaction. I am sad. I do not know what to do. Even Thelma hate my guts lately, and for the past 10 years, everytime I come home late after some philosophical and political discussions, normally over bottles of beers, or Gin Premium, (where one time with Adrian Donald, I learned the meaning of phenomenology and shit but began to forget after two tall bottles of pure, unadulterated crazy freakout Ginebra gin), without informing her.

Sigh. I am broken. She shouted at me one time for going home early...in the morning and telling me to shape up and telling me that I do stupid things by writing stupid things in my stupid fucked up blog and that it is not the real thing and that it is all for show and that the real thing is what is happening in the fucking house in the fucking real time and that I am immature. I told her: "Then write your own fucking blog!"

Hohum.
